Aerothermal databases and load predictions for Retro Propulsion-Assisted Launch Vehicles (RETALT)

چکیده

Abstract The assessment of thermal loads occurring on reusable launch vehicles during the entire trajectory is essential for correct dimensioning protection system. Due to costs and limitations ground-based testing large-scale vehicles, these predictions rely intensively numerical simulations (CFD). need aero-thermal databases, as a fast-response surrogate model aero-thermodynamic heating, arises from practical impossibility performing unsteady CFD analysis over due large disparity fluid mechanical structural time scales. construction databases based representative set which cover, at minimum, flight regimes with significant loads. aim this paper analyse results both ascent atmospheric entry RETALT1 vehicle show typical flow field phenomena phases resulting heating patterns.

Exploiting Technological Synergies for Future Launch Vehicles

Two launch vehicle concepts based on technologies available today or in a short term future in Western Europe are presented. The design of both launchers has the goal of exploiting synergies with current European programs to limit development and operational costs. Technologies of particular interest here are the high performance solid rocket motors with carbon-epoxy filament wound monolithic m...

Distributed Propulsion Vehicles

Since the introduction of large jet-powered transport aircraft, the majority of these vehicles have been designed by placing thrust-generating engines either under the wings or on the fuselage to minimize aerodynamic interactions on the vehicle operation. However, advances in computational and experimental tools along with new technologies in materials, structures, and aircraft controls, etc. a...

Automated launch, recovery, and refueling for small unmanned aerial vehicles

Small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are hindered by their limited payload and duration. Consequently, UAVs spend little time in their area of operation, returning frequently to base for refueling. The effective payload and duration of small UAVs is increased by moving the support base closer to the operating area; however this increases risk to personnel. Performing the refueling operations a...

Generic Simulation Models of Reusable Launch Vehicles

Analyzing systems by means of simulation is necessarily a time consuming process. This becomes even more pronounced when models of multiple systems must be compared. In general, and even more so in today’s fast-paced environment, competitive pressure does not allow for waiting on the results of a lengthy analysis. That competitive pressure also makes it more imperative that the processing perfo...
